A royal fortress of the Hindu Shahis, which served briefly as their capital after the loss of Udabhanda (Waihind, now Hund) to Mahmud of Ghazni in 1001. In 1014 this was the site of a historic battle between Mahmud of Ghazni and the Hindu Shahi Bhimapala (later king, 1021-1026).
