This was the first Roman Catholic Church in Guyana that was built specially for the Portuguese living in the country.

Masses were conducted in Portuguese. The church was blessed by Father Schembri in December of 1861 at it's first Midnight Mass.

The plot of land on which the church stood was bought for G$1000.00 and the total estimated value of the construction of the church was G$18,000.00 after it's completion.

On the morning of 25th December, 2004; the church and the primary school found in the compound was burnt to the ground in a mysterious fire and has not been rebuilt since.

Controversy surrounds the issue of rebuilding since there was an insurance scam in which a prominent Economist (Frederick Sukhdeo) was involved in which he claims that the church had an insurance policy for US$2 Million, of which the church denies.

Another issue which hampers rebuilding is the fact that the Arch-diocese n Guyana has not given permission for the rebuilding of the Scared Heart Church.

The issue involving the insurance scam is still in the Court system in Guyana.
