Tahsil Neemuch, District Neemuch, Madhya Pradesh
Neemuch has three main localities namely Baghana, Neemuch Cantt and Neemuch City. Older settlements of Gwalior State are Neemuch City and Baghana. Later settlement is British Cantonment of Neemuch which was established in c. 1818, this settlement came to be known as Neemuch Cantt. Though the British Cantonment was disbanded by Government of India in c. 1932 but the locality is still known as Neemuch Cantt. To differentiate between two separately administered (i.e. Gwalior State and British area) localities came to be known as Neemuch City and Neemuch Cantt. More than 80 years have passed after disbanding of cantonment but the respective localities are still known as Neemuch City and Neemuch Cantt. Neemuch Cantt had lot of open spaces designed for cavalary. Neemuch is also spelled as Nimach which is acronym for North India Mounted Artillary and Cavalary Headquarters.
After independence three localities of Baghana, Neemuch Cantt and Neemuch City were amalgamated as Neemuch.
Neemuch Cantt is situated in the middle with lots of open spaces for development. So all the government offices were shifted to Neemuch Cantt. Neemuch Cantt may be termed as Sadar (means headquarter) or Centre Point or Focal Point or any other name sanctioned by State Government etc.
Neemuch City is popularly known as City and Neemuch Cantt is popularly known as Chhaoni i.e. cantonment. Till this problem of misnomers of localities is resolved the localities will be known as Neemuch Cantt and Neemuch City.
