Sackets Harbor was the center of U.S. naval and military activity for the St. Lawrence Valley and Lake Ontario. Thousands of soldiers and sailors were quartered here for a planned invasion of Canada. On May 29, 1813, while most of this force was attacking Fort George, a British-Canadian force attacked Sackets Harbor with a naval bombardment in hopes of destroying the shipyard. The U.S. military stores were destroyed by the bombardment but the U.S. defenders prevented the British/Canadian force from landing.
