North Mitrovica is the northern part of the city of Mitrovica, which the river Ibar divides from the rest of the city. It is a part of North Kosovo, a region with an ethnic Serb majority that functions largely autonomously from the remainder of the ethnic-Albanian-majority Kosovo.
It covers 1/5th of entire Mitrovica and has a population over 20 thousand people of whom 17 thousand are Serbians, 2 thousand Albanians and a thousand other minorities.
North Mitrovica currently represents one of the most important political, educational and health centers for Serbians in Kosovo. It is the only urban area in Kosovo where Serbs have a majority.
