Part of Fort Wayne's economy for over a century, at its peak, the General Electric facility employed more than 10,000. In 2014, GE announced that the plant would close indefinitely in 2015. The 31-acre campus includes 17 buildings, covering 1.2 million square feet.

In 2017, Baltimore-based Cross Street Partners announced a $300 million public-private plan to redevelop the campus into a mixed-use, urban district named Electric Works. The first phase opened in 2022.

The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on February 27, 2023, as the General Electric Fort Wayne Electric Works Historic District.
