This is Lower Basildon in Berkshire about 50 miles from London. The River Thames is over there. And in 1838, navies laying this railway, discovered what they called Roman pavements in this field. Judging from this which was painted at the time, what they found were two posh mosaic floors probably from a Roman villa.

Unbelievably, the mosaics were broken up and no effort was made to find any more of the building. This whole site was virtually forgotten until recently when some intriguing crop marks showed up on an aerial photograph of this field, look at these.

Because of this a group of villagers contacted Time Team, they want to know did Brunel’s great western railway really cut through a Roman villa and is this the only thing that’s waiting to be found, in this field? Time Team have got just three days to find out.
