City with a population of 8,035 in 2000. State capital and shire town of Washington County. The smallest state capital in the U.S. The area was granted to settlers in 1781 who began to permanently settle here in 1787. It was named for the French city of Montpellier. Officially designated the new state capital in 1805, chosen for its proximity to Vermont's geographic center. The legislature began to officially meet here in 1808. Incorporated as a village in 1818, and as a city in 1895.

And, for what it's worth, the only state capital without a McDonald's within city limits.

  • There is one about 2 miles from Montpelier center....in the town of Berlin. Oh and a McDonalds too!

  • Charlios on main st. is awesome!! Vermont comes from a French word for green mountain. Until 1996 we were the only state without a Wal-Mart
