San Pedro church

Chile / Antofagasta / Calama /

The church stands beside the beautiful square of San Pedro, set with ancient pepper trees. Constructed in adobe, it is the biggest in the area.

It is surrounded by a wall made of the same material, built in 1978. The roof beams are made from planks of carob, tied with leather straps, and the roof is constructed of cactus laths covered with mud and straw.

The present church walls date back to 1774, in spite of having been repaired between 1839 and 1843 after a fire. The adobe tower was added in 1964 to replace an older one made of wood. It was declared a National Monument in 1951.
