Built in 1912-1913 by the Victoria Opera House Company and originally called "The Royal Victoria Theatre",it was a venue for live dramatic, musical & vaudeville performances.

Famous Players acquired the building in 1930, renaming it the "Royal Theatre", and established its primary use as a movie theatre. The Royal Theatre was restored as a live theatre in 1972.

The theatre was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1987.
