Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve
Situated on the main road, approximately half way between the Memorial gate and the Hilltop camp.
Bush encroachment
- The increase in indigenous scrub thicket or tree growth to the detriment of grassland.
It is known from early accounts and from photographs taken in this area, many years ago, that the area used to be open savannah. The area around this dam has been artificially cleared, but compared with the dense surrounding bush it goes without saying that the change has been dramatic. The encroachment of bush is undoubtedly the most serious problem facing the management of Hluhluwe.
In Hluhluwe the loss of certain habitats has meant the loss of a number of animal species, as many animals are adapted to particular habitats such as wetlands or grasslands. Coupled with this problem is the deduction in general visibility, and consequently a deterioration in the quality of the game viewing.
The World Conservation Strategy was launched in 1980 and it is based on three important objectives:
- Species and ecosystems must be helped to retain their capacity for self-renewal so that sustainable utilisation of wildlife, fish, forests, and grazing lands are ensured.
- Basic life support systems and ecological processes of the planet, such as climate, water cycles and soils must be conserved if life is to continue.
- Genetic diversity must be maintained. The range of genetic material found in the world's organisms must be preserved for breeding programmes necessary for the protection and improvement of cultivated plants, domesticated animals and micro-organisms, as well as for scientific and medical advancements.
