Castle of Eger (Eger)

Hungary / Heves / Eger
 castle, museum, ruins, interesting place

It was here, within the walls of Eger castle in 1551, that Captain István Dobó and his men, joined by the inhabitants of the town and the whole region, succeeded in withstanding the siege of a hundred-thousand-strong Turkish army. The victory stopped the menacing Ottoman forces for half a century. In 1596, however, the garrison yielded to the repeated attack, and for almost a century the castle and the town fell under Turkish rule.
In 1701, the Austrians exploded half of the castle (the Külső vár). In 1901, Géza Gárdonyi published his novel Eclipse of the Crescent Moon (the title of the novel is "The Stars of Eger" in Hungarian).
