The former sudanese president Gaafar Nimeri tried to convert the Khalifa Square into a public park in the 1970s. considerable money was spent and an attempt was made to build a 40ft high monument (see shadows at the centre).
Every year, the birthdate of the prophet Mohammed PBUH is celebrated in Omdurman in the form of a festival where special "Mawlid" sweets are made for the occasion and are sold on temporary stands.
