Parque de la Bombilla (Distrito Federal)

 park, interesting place

"Lightbulb Park" is the location where Álvaro Obregón, revolutionary leader and President of Mexico (1920 - 1924), was assassinated. On July 17, 1928, José de León Toral managed to sneak a pistol past security at a banquet in Obregón's honor at the “La Bombilla” restaurant just outside of Mexico City. Toral made a sketch of Obregón and then took it to him. The sketch was good and it pleased Obregón, who allowed the young man to finish it at the table. Instead, Toral pulled his gun and shot Obregón in the face, killing him immediately. Toral was executed within days of the assassination.

Obregón's four years in office were known for agrarian and anticlerical reforms he instituted and for the cultivation of good relations with the United States, based on the sale of Mexican petroleum to the U.S. market.

The park includes a monument in Obregón's memory.
