South Africa's oldest high school, this institution has served the Eastern Cape since 1822. It was founded by James Rose-Innes, a Scottish teacher brought out by Lord Somerset as part of his controversial Anglicization plan for the Cape Colony. The school underwent several name changes before being named for Sir Thomas Muir in 1896.
