The monastery had its origins as a small chapel built on the spot where, in about 1300AD, a shepherd had found a statue of the Virgin Mary on the bank of the Guadalupe River. This shrine became a center of pilgrimage and developed into one of the most important monasteries in Spain. Since 1993 it has been protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
