City with a population of 82,804 at the 2000 census. State capital and county seat of Mercer County. First settled by Quakers in 1679. In 1719 the town became known as Trent-towne after William Trent, one of its leading figures. During the Revolutionary War, Trenton was the site of George Washington's first major military victory when American fores crossed the Delaware River and defeated a Hessian garrison here on December 26, 1776. Briefly served as the national capital of the United States in November and December 1784. The state legislature met here from 1784 on, and the state capital was officially established here in 1790. Incorporated as a town in 1792. In 1837 it was incorporated as a city. The site of major riots in 1968 after the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr.
