Acquired in 1801. Transferred to the Department of the Interior and used as an Indian School from 1879 to 1918. Returned to the War Department on 16 July 1918. US Army Field Medical School was established there in 1920. Formerly home to the 1st Medical Regiment from 1922 to 1941.
Now home of the U.S. Army War College, an advanced academic training institution, and a garrison of soldiers, which make up most of the base population of nearly 3,000. There are 217 acres of offices, classrooms, and historic structures near Harrisburg. For more than 200 years, Carlisle Barracks has been at the forefront of pioneering military education and innovative measures to prepare for a changing world. That tradition continues today as the small Pennsylvania post has played host and played a role in many major military and historical American history events.
The USAWC prepares students to assume strategic leadership responsibilities. Upon program completion, many graduates begin operating in the national strategic or theater strategic environment—either directly or as advisers to the senior leadership of the Armed Forces, the Department of Defense, other governmental agencies, or in foreign militaries. A select number of graduates eventually will assume the most senior leadership positions within their organizations, leading them at the strategic level.
