León has fine examples of Spanish Colonial architecture, including the grand Cathedral of the Assumption, built from 1706 to 1740, with two towers added in 1746 and 1779.

  • Both Leon and Granada were former Capitals of Nicaragua. The current capital, Managua, was made the current capital as a middle ground to encourage the two battling cities to make peace (clearly, they have). It is also possible to go "volcano boarding" in Leon, through the Bigfoot Youth Hostel.
