A member of the Admiral W. S. Benson Class of troop transports, the Gaffey was a decorated WWII, Korea and Vietnam Veteran, originally named USS Admiral W. L. Capps.
Serving with the US Navy from 1944 to 1969 as a troopship, the Gaffey was decommissioned and laid up in Pearl Harbor where she was converted into a Barracks Ship and redesignated IX-507 in 1978. She served in this role until 1993 when she was struck from the Naval Register and environmentally prepared to be sunk as a target.
Her end came on June 16th, 2000 when she was sunk at this location during RIMPAC 2000 by combined US, Japanese & Taiwanese Naval forces using guided missiles. The ship now lies in 2,370 fathoms.
