St Lambert's Church (Münster)

Germany / Nordrhein-Westfalen / Munster / Münster
church, listed building / architectural heritage, Roman Catholic church

St Lambert's Church (1375), with three cages hanging from its tower above the clock face. In 1535 these cages were used to display the corpses of Jan van Leiden and other leaders of the Münster Rebellion, who promoted polygamy and renunciation of all property.

This late Gothic hall church dating back to the 14 th /15 th centuries forms one end of Prinzipalmarkt. This is where Cardinal von Galen, the socalled “Lion of Münster”, preached his courageous sermons criticizing the Nazis. On the church tower three iron cages have been preserved in which the bodies of the Anabaptist leaders were displayed in the mid16th century to act as a warning to the population. Above this is the room of the tower warden. Every evening (except Tuesday) he blows his horn every halfhour until midnight. First mentioned in documents in 1481, his job originally was to stand guard and watch out for fires. www.muenster.de/stadt/tourismus/pdf/stadtfuehrer2012_gb...
