  • The Sialkot based Federal Minister for Population Welfare Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan has got the federal ministry as gift for defeating the PML-Qs giant candidate the then Speaker National Assembly Chaudhry Ameer Hussain. Her very close relatives said that she had encashed her victory against Chaudhry Ameer Hussain. However, she deserved for the prize as federal ministry to balance the power of local politics in this area. The PPPs strong candidate Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan had knocked out her rival PML-Qs candidate the then Speaker National Assembly Chaudhry Ameer Hussain from his native constituency NA 111 (Bajwat-Sialkot) with a great margin of more than 35000 votes in Feb 18, 2008 general elections. Meanwhile, the people of Bajwat-Sialkot have warmly welcomed her induction in federal cabinet and they decorated the area with colourful buntings and lightings to rejoice her induction. They distributed of the sweets and said that she will end the areas backwardness, besides protecting the basic rights of local politically oppressed people. The local people have announced to accord warm welcome to Federal Minister for Population Welfare Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan upon her first visit to her constituency after becoming the federal minister. After the Feb 18, 2008 general elections, the Sialkot based Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan is the first federal minister from Sialkot district. Earlier, the PML-Ns central leader and MNA from constituency NA 110-Sialkot Khawaja Muhammad Asif had been made federal minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources in the PML-N and PPP coalition government, but he resigned after the collapse of this political alliance. basheer ahmad shad bajwatii
