fortification, gatehouse, National Trust property (UK), listed building / architectural heritage
This is an impressive 14th-century moated gatehouse and was established by John de Haudlo in 1312. It is unique in the fact that it is Buckinghamshire's only complete medieval fortified building. It was subsequently updated to serve as a hunting lodge in 1615, fortunately retaining its original belfry and crenellations. Parts of the building and many of the internal rooms have remained untainted from the test of time.
