Vehicle Assembly Building at the John F. Kennedy Space CenterBuilt in the mid-1960's to facilitate the assembly of the Saturn V rocket, the Vehicle Assembly Building, originally called the "Vertical Assembly Building," was the largest building in Florida and has a volume so large, NASA folklore said that the VAB had its own meteorology--people claimed that clouds can form inside and rain. Currently, the VAB is used to assemble the Space Shuttle, and will be converted in the future to handle the Crew Exploration Vehicle, the Ares I crew launch vehicle, and the future Ares V cargo launch vehicle. To illustrate the size of the building where the Saturn V and now Shuttle stacks are assembled, the stripes on the US flag on the south side of the building are large enough to drive a bus on (visible at maximum zoom).
