The three Filipino Roman Catholic priests, Rev Mariano C. Gómez, José G. Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora were charged and found guilty of inciting the 1872 Cavite Mutiny. The three priests were executed by garrote (strangulation device) on this spot on February 17, 1872, their deaths considered among the several catalysts of the 1896 Philippine Revolution against the Spanish Empire.
