Bellevue Hospital Center, founded in 1736, is the oldest public hospital in the United States. It is located in New York City and has been the site of countless milestones in the history of medicine. Its main campus was designed in the early 1900's by McKim, Mead & White with often structural elements by the Guastavino Fireproof Tile Co. (though most is likely gone now). The $5 million Bellevue Hospital was largely constructed with federal Public Works Administration (PWA) funds during the 1930s though it has been extensively altered since. Several murals were painted for the recreational rooms of the Psychiatric Building by WPA artists.
