Visvalža Street, 8 (Riga)

Latvia / Riga / Riga / Visvalža Street, 8
 Baroque (architecture), wooden, apartment building

Visvalža iela 8, which dates from the mid-18th century, is a Barocco/Neo-Classicism one-floor wooden manor house that belonged to the Popov family of Russian merchants. Originaly there was a group of such houses on this site surrounded by paths and gardens. The present facade dates from the end of 19th century.
A feature of the building is the cover above the entrance door. It covers whole width of pavement and was to allow people to enter the house directly from their carriage, without getting their feet wet. Above the door set into the doorframe decoration is the Russian letter 'P' (Popov).
I believe this to be the oldest house in central Riga
