This stone gate tower designed for defensive measures on the Welsh side of the River Monnow was thought to have been erected in the 14th century. It originally possessed the main arch for the road but pedestrian arches were added in the 19th century.
Monnow Bridge Tower has the unique 'accolade' of being the only example of a gate tower located ON a bridge in Great Britain. (Gate towers are usually situated at the entrances to either side of a bridge.)
