It was completed in 1959 to commemorate the 10-year celebration of Communist rule. It complements the opposing Great Hall of the People which was built in the same year. The museum sits on 40,000 square metres and has a frontal length of 313 metres, a height of 4 stories totaling 40 metres, and a width of 140 metres.
The National Museum of China was formed in 2003 out of two separate museums that occupied the building (Museum of the Chinese Revolution in the north wing and the National Museum of Chinese History in the South Wing).
