Aizpute is one of the oldest cities in Latvia and because of the nearby River Tebra it was a strategically important place both for ancient tribes and the first bishops. The status of a city had already been granted to Aizpute in the 14th century, and later it was a member of the Hansatic League. From the earliest historical periods different attractions have been preserved until today. Among the most important of them are the Castle of the Livonian Order, stone bridge over the River Tebra, manor house and the whole manor ensemble, including mill, brewery, forge and servants’ houses. The old city of Aizpute, which is both historically and architectonically famous nationally and worldwide, is characterised as quiet, calm and ancient.
