Concord (IPA: /ˈkɒnkərd/) is the capital of the state of New Hampshire and county seat of Merrimack County. As of the 2000 census, its population was 40,687. Originally settled by the Pennacook Native Americans. In 1725 the province of Massachusetts Bay established the land as the plantation of Penacook. It was settled thereafter. In 1734 the town was incorporated as Rumford, in 1765 renamed to Concord. Canal development connected it with Boston, and its central location in the state convinced the legislature to move the capital here in 1808.
