Umarizal is a district in downtown Belém, capital city in Pará state, Brazil. A well-known bohemian place, frequented by intelectuals and samba musicians, Umarizal was essentially familiar and residential, on one side, and industrial on the other, until the 70s. However, as the city grew up, many residential buildings and commerce establishments spun up, taking over the place that once belonged to big nostalgic houses and wide warehouses. In Umarizal, many respected local artists grew up or lived a part of their lives, including writer Raymundo Mario Sobral, female journalist and writer Eneida de Moraes, samba composer David Miguel and teacher Poranga Jucá. The disctrict's name derives from the many umari trees (a forest berry) that existed there when it was first occupied.
