Guderian's Bridgehead

This is where General Heinz Guderian's XIX corps crossed the Meuse river on May 14, 1940. It was because of this crossing that the Germans were able to outflank and cut off the concentration of allied forces in the north, allowing them to quickly overrun France.

Interestingly enough. Napoleon III was crushed near here in 1870. In a way, the French Third Republic was born, and died, at Sedan.
