Helwerd nowadays consists of two uninhabited heights in the municipality of Eemsmond. The heights are about halfway Rottum and Usquert, at the westside of the road. At the lower side of the heights is a farm. The settlement once was an important one. According to the legends the missionary St. Liudger cured in 8th century AD the blind Frisian poet Bernlef of his blindness. Thankfull to his cure, Bernlef sang from then on no more heathen stories, but changed his repetoire to liturgical. The Groningen dialect poet Jan Boer wrote a poem about this history. To the south of Helwerd is the Helwerdermaar.
