  Hardwick House is one of several properties thought to have been the inspiration for Toad Hall, from Wind In The Willows by Kenneth Grahame (who lived in nearby Pangbourne). The illustrations from the original (assuming that Grahame's "Iron Bridge" is the Whitchurch Toll Bridge) would seem to support this. Of course, the book is fiction, so...
