A multidisciplinary scientific organization conducting comprehensive research on the physical and technical problems of nuclear science and technology. The IPPE was founded on May 31, 1946. It became the first institute in the country created to develop nuclear reactors.

The reactor of the world's first nuclear power plant, Obninsk, was shut down on April 29, 2002. The decision to shut down the reactor was taken by the Russian government. The reactor was put into operation on June 27, 1954 and opened the way for the use of atomic energy for peaceful purposes. It was called PARR (Peaceful Atom Research Reactor) and operated for 48 years. Its power was 5 Megawatts. Now it is a museum.
