Scene of heavy fighting during the Battle of Loos (1915). Among the many British and Empire troops to lose their lives at the Chalk Pit was John Kipling, son of the author Rudyard Kipling who died here in Autumn 1915 during the Battle of Loos. Despite lying in an unmarked grave for many years, Kiplings body was eventually identified and he is buried at St Mary's ADC cemetary near Huluch. Kipling never got over the death of his son, and worked for many years with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
