The William S. Greene School is one of nine elementary schools left in the city. It was built over the site of its predecessor in the late 1990s and early 2000s, as part of the city's plan to consolidate schools. Like several of the other new schools in the city, Greene has preserved the name of one of the schools who closed because of it, in the Connell Community Room.
