Sayan Mountains (Russian, Sayanskiy Khrebet), mountain range in the southern Siberia region of Russia and forming the northern border of the Republic of Mongolia. The range consists of two systems: the Eastern Sayan and the Western Sayan. The Eastern Sayan system begins near the western bank of the lower Yenisey River and extends eastward approximately 900 km (approximately 600 mi) to Lake Baikal. Its highest peak, located on the Mongolian border, is Mount Munku-Sardyk (3,491 m/11,453 ft), which has has several glaciers.
