Charlotte Amalie is the capital and largest city of the U.S. Virgin Islands. It is located on the island of Saint Thomas and as of 2004 had an estimated population of 19,000 (the 2000 U.S. Census found a population of 18,914. Named in 1691 for Charlotte Amalie of Hesse-Kessel, consort to King Christian V of Denmark. The area was settled by the Carib Native Americans at the time of European exploration. Christopher Columbus sighted the island in 1493. The Dutch settled on the island in 1657, and the Danish conquered it in 1666. It became one of the largest hubs in the Transatlantic Slave Trade during the 17th century. In 1917 the Americans purchased the Virgin Islands from the Danish and Charlotte Amalie became capital of the American territory.
