  • The base name is SHIMOFUSA, not Shimousa. It is a JMSDF (Japanese Navy) base, formerly U. S. Air Force Base known as Shiroi Air Base, until 1959.

  • To clarify: "JMSDF" = Japan Marfitime Self-Defense Forces. I was stationed there 1954-56 & again part of 1959, until the base shut down. One of the best assignments in the USAF at that time, probably ever! I attended a reunion of several units, including the one I was with in 54-56, back in 2006. MANY changes, of course...now they have PLANES on the base! Anyone who was stationed there, post here...we have a website titled SHIROI AIR BASE, JAPAN (USAFSS)...password required, I'm Site Admin.
