Rebuilt in stone in the 1670s, to replace a wooden fort burned in the 1625 attack by the Dutch, The fort held a chain at the ready, to be stretched across the harbour from El Canuelo to El Morro to block the harbour entrance. the fort also served to protected the mouth of Bayamon River, an important supply route to the interior.
