The museum is situated on the site of the Fosse Delloye in Lewarde, which was active between 1931 and 1971. It employed a maximum of 1,000 miners.

The Houillères du Bassin du Nord et du Pas-de-Calais decided to transformer the fosse Delloye, situated in their centre, into a museum representative of three centuries of coal mining in the area.

The Association du Centre Historique Minier (CHM) was created in1982. The museum that opened its doors in 1984 has already welcomed over two million visitors in its 8,000 m².
