Site of the United States first major confrontation with German troops during WWII in February 1943. It was a humiliating defeat for the Americans due to the incompetent leadership of II Corps commander Lloyd Freedendall. Fortunately for the allies, German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's exploitation of this victory was hampered by interference from higher commanders, both German and Italian. The unimpressive performance of American forces here is thought to be a major factor in Rommel's underestimation of US troops in Normandy 16 months later.
