The company "J. A. Topf und Söhne " was a manufacturer of ovens and crematoria.
They built crematoria for KZ Auschwitz-Birkenau and other concentration camps in Nazi-occupied Europe. They also engineered and distributed technical installations for gas chambers on demand of the SS.
The company went on producing in former GDR and until 1994, when it became insolvent.

Since 2001 a part of the Topf-Area is "occupied" by left-wing squatters, who use it for historic, political and cultural work. Here there are places for parties, debates, free living and political action (topf.squat.net/).

In 2007 the ex-premises were sold to a real estate company, which wants to tear down nearly everything and build new houses there.

  • On 2009/04/16 400 special-police officers entered the house(s) and arrested the squatters. Afterwards the squatted buildings were destroyed.
