The Appèlbergen is a wood to the east of the village of Glimmen.
Popular wood for recreation. Originally a mount, berg in Dutch, of pineapples.
The area was used as a military training area. Soldiers have appeal, APPÈL.
The locals pronounce Appelbergen with the stress on the first e, instead of on the first syllable. In some other cases you see a switch of stress to the last syllable, like Buitenpost in Friesland and Zuidhorn in Groningen.
