production, open-pit mine
This is the ultimate pit outline for the Olympic Dam expansion and its final depth will be approximately 1220m. The mining of the pit will require the processing facilities to be relocated to the southeast of the current location, and the facilities will have a capacity of 60 Mtpa. BHPBilliton estimates the development of the pit to be progressive with construction activity spread over 11 years.
In 2012 the expansion plans were put on hold due to deteriorating market conditions and the fact the project has approximately a 30 Billion cost. However, in 2013 BHPBilliton's new Cheif Executive Andrew Mackenzie announced the project would continue but under extreme scrutiny of costs.
