The largest and most impressive of the four completed Elan Valley Dams, Claerwen dam holds back 48,300 megalitres of water. This dam was started in 1946 and was mostly built by Italian stonemasons as British workers were still busy rebuilding after the Second World War.
The Claerwen dam was built with later construction techniques than the other dams, and therefore has a concrete inner core. It was faced with stone in keeping with the other dams in the Elan Valley.
