Coal Museum

Italy / Sardinien / Carbonia / Centro Italiano Cultura del Carbone
 museum, mining, mining museum

The mining site, active from 1937 to 1964, was recovered and refurbished for museum and educational purposes. The museum, the underground gallery and the winch room are regularly open to the public from November 3, 2006; the project for the restoration and enhancement of the site made accessible buildings and mining structures that now make up the museum, which includes the premises of the lamp room, the underground gallery and the winch room.

In the lamp room it housed the permanent exhibition on the history of coal, the mine and the town of Carbonia, with a collection of mining lamps, work tools, instruments, everyday objects, photographs, documents, period films and video interviews the miners. The underground gallery shows the evolution of coal cultivation techniques used in Serbariu from the thirties to the cessation of the activity, in environments faithfully rearranged with period tools and equipment that is still in active use in coal mines. The winch room keeps inside the winch with which it was maneuvering the descent and ascent of the cages in the wells for the transport of the miners and empty sedans or carbon fillers.
You should check the opening hours on the websites of museums prior to the visit.
