Thanks to Providence's archaic parking laws, which prohibit overnight parking on city streets, much of what might have been green space throughout the city -- from vacant lots to side-yards, has been paved for parking.

Dating from a corruption-ridden era in which contractors of largely Mediterranean extraction pretty much "ran" Providence, the off-street parking laws are more suitable to the first third of the 20th century than to any time in the 21st. Still, as long as any green space is left within the city limits, the city council stubbornly holds to the idea that it would be impossible for Providence to do what nearly all other large cities do -- allow on-street parking by residential permit.
